10/11/02 - 10/12/02 - Sedona

Welcome to the red rocks of Sedona, AZ. Turns out there was some type of festival in Sedona and I just happen to stroll up at 7:00pm on a Friday night expecting a room. As I drove around the town I saw nothing but "No Vacancy" signs. I went to the largest hotel I could find (a Best Western), put on my desperate face and asked for a room. The woman behind the desk smiled and said they just happen to have one room left and most likely it was the last available room in Sedona. Needless to say I took it. Check out this view.

After I unpacked and showered I went for a night out on the town. When I walked out on the main street I walked into the twilight zone. Not a single person on the street. Not a single car. Not a single store or restaurant open. Thinking Sedona sat in some type of time worm hole I checked my watch, 8:30pm. I could see a dozen hotels from where I stood, all said no vacancy. I rushed back to my room thinking they moved the Sopranos to Friday night.

In the morning the town was much more alive. I saw advertisements for Jeep tours of the red rocks. They had three types of tours. One: a mild dirt trail ride admiring the red rocks from afar. Two: A ride into the canyon on dirt trails. Three: A thrilling, yet informative, ride on the red rocks. An obvious choice don't you think.

Here is a picture of me with our Jeep and our Scottish driver Brian. He met an American lass vacationing in Scotland and four weeks later he moved to the U.S. Four weeks after that they were married. Interesting...

I was lucky enough to meet another great family. They were actually part of a larger family reunion that had all gather in Sedona to celebrate the Grandfather's 80th birthday.

When they said a thrilling ride they weren't kidding. Brian kept telling me I didn't have a break in the passenger seat. There were points where the tires were squealing and barely able to hold traction. I was amazed our Jeep was able to do some of the things it did.

Check out these great views. It's not nearly as rewarding as if you hiked it yourself, but, not bad. I've got to come back to Sedona for some mountain biking. They had tons of bike trails they brought you right up on the red rocks. I had a chance to talk to some bikers at a photo stop. They said it was amazing and that's all I needed to hear.

From Sedona I drove to Scottsdale, AZ in search of a livelier Saturday night. The car was a mess and it needed a good waxing. People were cruising in and out and I thought it was funny that all my stuff was out of the car. I can't imagine what people were thinking.
