Getting ready for leg two of the road trip. I am experimenting with new travel technology. These are "space bags" that require me to roll the air out of them. Believe it or not they actually work. I can now get all my clothes in one bag instead of two. This allows me to store all my loose items like roller blades, tennis gear, etc. in the second bag. Beam me up Scotty! My gracious L.A. host Molly. I made a mess of her apartment with all my stuff and she was a really good sport about it. As a thank you I took her out to see the Mama Mia musical. ABBA rocks!! The Getty museum in L.A.. This was the most amazing museum I've ever seen. I've never been more impressed with a museum. Not only was the art collection fantastic, but, the museum itself is actually art. It really enhanced the experience. I only planned to spend a few hours there and I ended up spending six hours. Many of the galleries have special light vents in the ceiling so you can see the art as it was produced under natural light. J. Getty was the most wealthy man in the world in his time. The museum runs off a five billion dollar trust he set up specifically for art and the promotion of the arts. The museum cost 1.2 billion to build and it's totally free to visit. Wow! A must see!! Welcome to La Jolla, CA. Yup, this is just normal street parking in this area. Here it's a frequent occurrence to see a $180k Ferrari parked next to two $100k Porsches. This place is ridiculous!! My friend Rich who was in on the Santa Barbara place with me is now living in La Jolla. He rented an apartment, moved out all his stuff, and is following his entrepreneurial dreams. This is the type of guy who will pull it off!!! For now a free place for Mikey to stay! Finally my sunset into the water!! Rich lives only half a block from the water and I've gone down every night to see the sunset. Surprisingly many of the locals do not take it for granted as I've seen many of the same faces there each night. First order of business. Renting boggie boards and hitting the surf. This was so much fun. We spent all day on the water in a full on battle with the waves. I lost several times. Towards the end of the day I decided to stop when a wave forced my face into the sand and I felt my feet hit me in the back of the head. On Friday we go back for round two with private surfing lessons!!! Second order of business, renting a sail boat. Hey we spent all this time in Santa Barbara getting certified why not use it. On Tuesday it was cloudy and windy so we go to Coronado Island and rent a 22ft sail boat. We had so much fun!!! At points the wind was so strong that I thought we were going to tip the boat over. The first time this happened Rich was steering and we both panicked. We started yelling at each other and at one point nobody was holding onto the tiller. Right, who wants to sail with us next time out? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Coronado Island is home to a huge naval base. Lets just say it was slightly intimidating when this nuclear air craft carrier went past our 22ft dingy. I'm happy to say we didn't get in its way. Considering it takes them half a mile to stop I don't think they would have avoided us if we did get in the way. I would have been in the water swimming to shore before Rich even finished the words abandon ship. |
